Fans ofOutlander have been wondering whether or not Captain Black Jack Randall was based on a real person or not.

Season three of Outlander saw the death of Captain Black Jack Randall, which led to questions about whether or not the tyrannical redcoat was actually based on a real figure.

Jonathan Randall, commonly known as 'Black Jack', was a minor knight in England during the time of the Jacobite Rising of 1745. He played a part in quashing the rebellion, and was heavily financially supported by the Duke of Sandringham. In 1746, Randall married Mary Hawkins, who bore him a son, Denys. Frank Wolverton Randall: Claire's husband in the 20th century and a history professor with a deep interest in his genealogy and heritage. He worked for MI6 during the Second World War as an intelligence agent. Jonathan Randall (aka 'Black Jack' Randall): The primary villain of the story and Frank Randall's ancestor, a British army officer. This gentleman, Jack Randall, looks just like her husband Frank—and proves to be Frank’s six-times-great-grandfather. Unfortunately, he also proves to be a sadistic bisexual pervert, and while trying to escape from him, Claire falls into the hands of a gang of Highland Scots, who are also trying to get away from Black Jack Randall—though.

Captain Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall (played by Tobias Menzies) passed many seasons ago. The evil villain died at the Battle of Culloden at the hands of Highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Over the course of his time on the show, 'Black Jack' proved to be the most bloodthirsty and violent character on the show.

His cruelty was unparalleled, as he used violence to ensure that he got everything he wanted on the show. His torturous ways meant that he was feared and loathed across the world of Outlander.

This has led fans to wonder if there is any truth behind the theory that 'Black Jack' was actually based on a real person.

But how much is the character rooted in reality and how much was borne from US author Diana Gabaldon’s imagination?

Well, according to some sources, the character was not based on any real person from the Jacobite era, unlike other characters on the show. Outlander featured some real figures including the Duke of Sandringham (Simon Callow) and Bonnie Prince Charlie (Andrew Gower).

A newspaper called The Scotsman, however, has suggested the character could have been based on captain Caroline Frederick Scott, who is described by the publication as having a “brutal streak”.

In the book Culloden: Scotland’s Last Battle by historian Trevor Royale, Scott was said to have been led by a “visceral dislike of Highlanders” and had a personal desire to kill Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Sound familiar? Based on this description, there's certainly a chance that the idea for 'Black Jack' stems from Captain Scott.

Avoiding the inevitable fate of characters from the past — even characters you despise — is tricky to do when time travel is involved. Spoilers for the Season 3 premiere of Outlander follow. With Frank Randall being well-versed in his family's history, Claire knew that Captain Black Jack Randall was supposed to die during the Battle of Culloden. However, her being from the future doesn't always give her all the facts, since she also thought that Jamie had died in that battle and discovered in the Season 2 finale that her assumption was (mind the pun) dead wrong. But when it comes to Jonathan Randall, the history books were right since, Jamie kills Black Jack Randall on the battlefield in the Season 3 premiere of Outlander, defeating his foe for the final time.

Even without reading the third book of the Outlander series, Voyager, viewers should have known the man lying on top of Jamie in the beginning of 'The Battle Joined' is Black Jack Randall. Because even in death, Randall is unsettlingly and poetically, connected to Jamie. So it's only fitting that Jamie is not only responsible for Black Jack's death, but that Jamie is still with him as he fights for his own life. And if you have any concerns that, like Jamie, Black Jack survives, there's no need. After tormenting Jamie and Claire for two seasons, Black Jack Randall is truly dead on Outlander. Hoorah! There's no denying that this sadist has had it coming for a long while.

Black Jack nearly kills Jamie during the battle, but the Scotsman is able to deliver the fatal blow to the man who viciously whipped and raped him — getting at least some justice. Even their final collapse on one another on the battlefield is reminiscent of the abuses Randall perpetrated on Jamie. But Black Jack will not be able to hurt Jamie or Claire ever again, as history predicted.

The only downside to Black Jack Randall dying on Outlander is the loss of Tobias Menzies being able to so skillfully portray this twisted character. Yet, Menzies time on Outlander isn't over yet with Frank being alive in Claire's timeline. Frank's fate is unfortunately doomed like his ancestor's, but viewers will have to adjust to seeing the kinder, gentler Randall again in Season 3 — at least for a little while.
